Go with the Flow: EMR Design that Accommodates Physical and Procedural Workflows

Designing an ipad-based EMR that physicians will actually use – and not loathe -- is a formidable task. Jill Reed, UX Research Manager at AllScripts, will share the role of research in translating critical features from a desktop product to a mobile format. The first step, research targeted at adapting the function of the mobile device to map directly to the dynamics of the clinical interaction from an “information flow” perspective. This information flow included the physician’s physical movements around the clinical environment during a patient encounter, as well as the maturation of information as the care provider learned more about the patient’s condition.

Next, Jill’s case study will explore the unique challenges of incorporating features from two disparate EMR products into one mobile product that met all of the physician’s EMR needs throughout the entire patient encounter, and eliminated the need to interact with a desktop device. The resulting reconciliation of the physical and procedural workflows gave the researchers insight into hidden provider needs that can be met through the exploitation of the rich features and fundamental attributes of today’s mobile devices.
